Hi! I’m Julia, and this is the piece of the internet where I’ll be journaling my family’s progress as we move towards a more Earth-friendly life. I’ll be sharing the projects we take on, the challenges we encounter, and the tips we pick up along the way!
With the birth of my third son, I knew something needed to change in our home. The amount of garbage we were producing, even after recycling and composting everything we could, seemed insane! And really, what it came down to was, we were throwing away money. The biggest and most obvious issue was diapers. The thought of two boys in diapers made me cringe, so I contacted a friend (who is a cloth diapering advocate) and my husband and I agreed that we could make the swap. It has sort-of snowballed from there…
As I became more conscious of what we were discarding, I started making my own solutions and replacements for common disposable products. Things like wipes, paper towels, Kleenex, sandwich baggies, etc. These are all products that cost money and then would go (almost) directly into the bin! I am in the process now of setting up shop on Etsy so that I can share a few of these solutions (so stay tuned!)
Throughout this transition, I have found so many great resources. I have come across some amazing bloggers and writers who have a ton of information on how to make the switch to a less-disposable life! Unfortunately, the one big problem that I’ve come up against in my search for information, is that nearly everything is written from the perspective of a single (often professional) individual. There is really nothing out there (that I could find) that resembles our hectic, home-educating, family of five.
My struggles with perfectionism have taught me that progress always trumps perfection. I am not a minimalist, I am not zero-waste, and I am not vegan. These are all great lifestyles but, for me (and my family), it’s not what this is about.
*This blog will focus on taking steps to move our family towards an earth-friendly life of intentional consumption.*
So, what does “earth-friendly” mean to me? It’s pretty simple, really, and it’s based on three clear principles:
- Good to, and for, humans,
- Good to, and for, animals,
- Good to, and for, the environment.
My family and I believe that, to be truly earth-friendly, we need to be considerate of everyone and everything. We are all in this together, after all!
Ultimately, I want families, like ours, to have a place to learn (and share!) how to make a difference! My goal is to continue to keep plastics out of the garbage and, hopefully, reduce the amount being made in the first place!
Thank you so, so much for taking the time to stop in! Please follow along with our adventure! ❤
